My Lao music sucks, what can I do!!

Wow! Happy new year to all. Hope you will make 2010 the best year ever. I was at the New year’s party in Fresno California; it was great except for the band and the music that they played. At time, as musicians we tend to sing and play songs that we like and not what the audiences really want.

This year I am going to be concentrating on playing Lao music that people like because this is what keeps them coming back. One thing that I have found is that it is not so much about the song but the style of music that you play. Paslop, Limborock, Talung, Offbeat, Megadance are some of the styles that many good Lao musicians neglect. Be sure to keep these styles in mind when you are playing at a party.

Learn How to Play Lao Music on Your Keyboard In One Day

First, learn how to play the chords. You could download the keyboard chord chart from this post and start practice playing them. I would suggest you start out with learning these chords first – Dm F Gm Am C Bb – When you learn these five chords you could play just about all Lao country songs out there because with the keyboard you could use the transpose button for scaling the notes.

Second, learn the melody. For me I used a program call Vanbaso. I just load in the midi file of a song that I want to learn. Mute all the channels except for the melody and a play along with it. And if I want to get the chords for the song I would mute all the channels except for the guitar chord. You could also lower the tempo if it is too fast for you. Pretty cool program to get the chord and the melody part.

If you are not a visual person then I would suggest this program Midi2Notation. Just get the player version it is free! With this program you could print out the melody part of a song or just the guitar chord. Check it out!

The key here is to learn the chord of a song, the melody and then bringing them together. Have fun!

Loading A Music Style files on Yamaha PSR E403

First, you need to install the music software downloader on your PC. The software should come with the keyboard. Once you have that, connect a USB cable to the E403 and in the software, click on musical instrument and flash memory.

Add your files and it will take about 10 seconds each to download.
When this is complete, you can retrieve your style files by pressing the function button and scrolling through until you find the sub menu “SFF load” all of your loaded styles will be in that area.

To load a style from “SFF load” press “0″ than press the yes button.
This will load that one style into style # 156

Top 5 reasons you should start playing the guitar

Growing up in Thailand, I never had a chance to play a musical instrument or have my own band. I was too poor at the time and still now! I am very anti-talent when it comes to music and it’s very hard for me to overcome. Just last year, I got myself an electric guitar. I had no clue what to do with it or how hard can it be to learn but I just I knew was that needed it!

5. Lamvong Lao – Leum Lai Ban Fan
Listen to a Lao band in Thailand playing the song “Leum Lao Ban Pha” with the guitar intro! Exceptional guitar piece. Video from YouTube.

4. Santana – Moon Flower
At the time, I didn’t know the name song but I just love the guitar intro solos of the song. Way to go Santana!

3. Loso – Somsan
Loso is great! Probably one of the greatest songs of all time..with very awesome ending solos!

2. Wanipop – Carabao
Thai band – they are good! The solo part is very inspiring. The first time I heard the song was just amazing to me.

1. Morlum – Motasai Hang
I love the guitar sound playing to this style of music. I guess I am a country boy.

Media Convert is a free online website that allows you to convert
media format from one type to another. This is great because you don’t
have to install anything on your computer and it’s rather fast. Once the conversion is completed, you could download it right away. Great for converting videos to play on your IPhones, video mp3 players, PSPs, and other video players that require special formating.

There are times when I download Lao Music videos from Youtube and could not watch them because they are in Flash format. So, with these media converters I could convert them to formats that will be playable on my computer and other devices.

Lao & Thai Keyboard Styles

When I got started with music my first instrument was a Yahama PSR 620 keyboard. I remember I was so happy when I picked it up at the post office. I was kinda disappointed because I thought that it would come with a built-in Lao style.

At the time, I didn’t know anybody in the Lao music community.So, like everybody else I went online and start searching for Yamaha Lao Keyboard Styles..couldn’t find anything! After many hours of frustration I was able to locate a website in Los Angeles that offers to sell Lao music styles. So, I went ahead and bought one music style..Lamvong just to test it out and it works perfectly. Thanks for the people in Los Angeles! The only thing that I don’t like is the price..$25 for one style and $100 for ten!

Now, that I am more active in the Lao music community, finding what I need is much easier and cheaper too. Hopefully, new Lao musicians will find this website useful.

Convert Old Cassette Tapes To Audio CD’s

I am pretty sure that most of us have a cassette tape that is valuable to us and that we want to keep it as long as possible. At times we will want to listen it while driving, the problem is that most of the cars these days doesn’t have a cassette tape player. The best solution is to convert it to a CD. Here’s how to do it!

It’s simple and you could do it. You just need one audio transfer cable and a sound record software. All you do is connect your audio transfer cable to the “headphone” jack of your cassette tape player to your PC’s “Line In” audio jack (on the sound card). Play the cassette and use your PC to record it and then burn your audio CD.
